Negation — nicht und kein

There are two ways to negate in German. Use 'kein/keine/kein' to negate a noun that has no article or an indefinite article — it follows the same endings as 'ein'. Use 'nicht' to negate verbs, adjectives, adverbs, or nouns with a definite article. 'Nicht' generally comes near the end of the clause.

  • Ich habe kein Auto. (negating a noun with no article)
  • Er hat keine Zeit.
  • Das ist kein Problem.
  • Ich komme nicht aus Deutschland. (negating a verb/adverb phrase)
  • Das Wetter ist nicht schön.
  • Ich verstehe das nicht.
